Colin Firth & Michael Fassbender’s ‘Genius’ Sells Around the World

Untitled 12

BERLIN — Colin Firth and Michael Fassbender’s Genius — based on A. Scott Berg’s National Book Award-winning biography Max Perkins: Editor of Genius — is sparking avid interest among independent distributors.

FilmNation has sold the film in a raft of key foreign territories, including to The Weinstein Co. in the U.K., Australia and New Zealand.
There’s no word on whether TWC will buy U.S. rights, but Harvey Weinstein’s shop would be a natural fit for Genius, having released the Oscar best picture The King’s Speech, for which Firth won the Oscar for best actor. TWC is one of the most aggressive players in the awards space, and Genius could well be a contender considering its pedigree.
Genius recounts the real-life relationship between literary giant Thomas Wolfe (Fassbender) and renowned editor Max Perkins (Firth), who developed a tender, complex friendship that changed the lives of both men forever.

CAA is arranging financing for Genius and is representing domestic rights. FilmNation began shopping the project to foreign buyers last fall and will continue sales at the European Film Market in Berlin, which got underway today.
Michael Grandage — who recently served as the artistic director of London’s famed theatre the Donmar Warehouse — will direct from an adapted script by John Logan and hopes to begin shooting in early 2014.
James Bierman is producing for the Michael Grandage Co. Bierman served as executive producer at Donmar and formed MGC with Grandange.
In addition to the deals for the U.K., Australia and New Zealand, Genius has sold to Mars in France, Central Partnership in C.I.S., Revolutionary Releasing in Poland, Paradiso Film in Benelux, LEV Cinemas in Israel, Italia Film International in the Middle East, Mis Label Aps in Scandinavia, Elite Film AG in Switzerland, Sun Distribution Group in Mexico, Edko Film Ltd. in Hong Kong, Gaga in Japan, Shaw in Singapore, Dreamwest Pictures in South Korea, Studio Solutions Group in Taiwan and Ster Kinekor Entertainment in South Africa.
The sale to Telepool and Senator in Germany was previously announced. [source]

Rodrigo Santoro joins Lynne Ramsay’s ‘Jane Got A Gun’ with Michael Fassbender & Natalie Portman

Untitled 9

As if “Morvern Callar” and “We Need To Talk About Kevin” helmer Lynne Ramsay doing a western wasn’t enough to get you excited, the cast itself is a powderkeg all its own. With Natalie Portman, Michael Fassbender and Joel Edgerton already lined up, a new name has now come on board.
“300” star Rodrigo Santoro has joined “Jane Got A Gun,” playing the part of Fitchum. Penned by Brian Duffield, the story will follow Jane Hammond (Portman), a good girl married to one of the worst baddies in town. When her husband Bill (Edgerton) turns against his own gang, the vicious Bishop Boys, and returns home barely alive with eight bullets in his back, Jane decides to grab a gun and take matters into her own hands. As the relentless leader John Bishop gears up for revenge, Jane’s best hope for her family’s survival rests with her old love Dan Frost (Fassbender) – a gunslinger whose hatred for Bill is only slightly overshadowed by his love for Jane.

Production is slated to begin soon so we’ll just place this already on our anticipated list for 2014. As for Santoro, after last month’s “The Last Stand” and this summer’s “300: Rise Of An Empire,” it might be a nice change of pace from playing second fiddle to Arnie and getting greased up and yelling. ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ to take place 10 years after ‘First Class’

Untitled 6

While the first three “X-Men” films were (relatively) contemporary, the Matthew Vaughn-directed “X-Men: First Class” turned back the clock to 1962 in order to explore the early days of Professor X, his friend-turned-nemesis Magneto and some of the younger mutants who would go on to form the X-Men.

With the upcoming sequel “X-Men: Days of Future Past,” things could get a little funky.

According to a casting call sheet obtained by Comic Book News, “most of the film” takes place in 1973. That’s a full decade after the events in “First Class,” which centered around the Cuban Missile Crisis.

Returning director Bryan Singer has lined up a stellar cast for “Past,” with veterans Hugh Jackman, Patrick Stewart and Ian McKellen rubbing shoulders with their “First Class” counterparts, including James McAvoy as a younger Xavier, Michael Fassbender as junior Magneto, Nicholas Hoult (Beast) and Jennifer Lawrence (Mystique).

The most recent announcements also revealed the return of Shawn Ashmore as Iceman, Anna Paquin as Rogue, and Ellen Page as Kitty Pryde.

With the film taking place in two timelines — the 1973 “present” and a dystopian future era — the returning “X-Men” cast members (Jackman, Stewart, McKellen, etc) will likely only be seen in scenes depicting the film’s future.

Before leaving the director’s chair, Vaughn previously said he envisaged kicking off the sequel with the 1963 assassination of JFK, which seems much less likely now. However, ’73 saw its share of significant shakeups, including the end of U.S. involvement in the Viet Nam war; a crippling gas crisis; a war in Israel; and the aftermath of the Watergate scandal.

The call sheet also notes that the Montreal shoot will last from April to August, which is a fairly long production schedule.
“X-Men: Days of Future Past” will be released July 18, 2014. [source]
